Letter from Aileen Samford to Barbara Norman, 1977 August 17
Scope and Contents
Samford writes to Barbara Norman of the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Humanities at the suggestion of Larry Rosenbaum. She encloses photographs, Woodham's résumé, and a newspaper clipping, asking that the photographs be returned for local publicity. She gives a history of the Azalea Garden Club, organized in 1946 with thirty members, and of the commission, which Woodham accepted before the Arts Center was built. Woodham conceived Whirlwind after studying the site and remembering the small whirlwinds common in Alabama. The letter announces the presentation at 11:30 a.m. on September 20, 1977, on the terrace of the Cooper Memorial Library and Arts Center, preceded by an Opelika Arts Association coffee and followed by an Azalea Garden Club luncheon. The letter's second page is filed and imaged with OPL010_009 (image OPL010_009_B). See also the draft (OPL010_030), a photocopy (OPL010_037), and a standalone version of the text (OPL010_028).
