Malcolm C. Humphries journal (U.S.S. Griggs log book), April-December 1945

Personal log kept by Malcolm Clayton Humphries, a U.S. Navy pharmacist's mate, aboard the attack transport U.S.S. Griggs (APA-110). Entries begin April 14, 1945, with the ship's departure from Norfolk, Virginia, carrying roughly 1,400 Marines, and follow its passage through the Caribbean and Panama Canal into the Pacific, troop-transport duty, and the Okinawa area, including the writer's account of the end of the war in August 1945. Closing entries in December 1945 record his transfer to shore and transport duty and the voyage toward home. Contains tipped-in photographs of shipmates at Cristobal, Panama, a souvenir photograph from Norfolk, family portraits, and home snapshots.
