Elbert D. Humphries journal, "Life Overseas", November 1944-May 1945

Wartime diary and memoir kept by Pfc. Elbert D. Humphries of a field artillery survey section, titled by him "Life Overseas." Entries run from his embarkation at Boston on November 10, 1944, through the Atlantic crossing, staging in England, and the move into Germany; the opening of the Battle of the Bulge and his capture near Luxembourg on December 19, 1944; the forced march and boxcar transport; imprisonment at Stalag IV-B; labor commandos in Dresden; and an extended eyewitness account of the Allied firebombing of Dresden on February 13 and 14, 1945. Closing entries follow the spring 1945 evacuation march and approaching liberation. Includes extensive food and menu lists characteristic of prisoner-of-war hunger diaries.
